How to set your Git username and email — git config

You just installed Git on a new machine and your first commit is refused or stamped with the wrong name.

git config --global user.name "Your Name"     # your display name
git config --global user.email "you@example.com"  # your email

Good to know

Every commit you make is stamped with this name and email. Do this once per machine.
