hostnamectl, timedatectl, localectl — set hostname, time and locale

Machine identity basics: hostname, timezone and clock, locale and keymap — one *-ctl tool each.

Most management commands need sudo, and systemctl only works on a system actually booted with systemd — inside containers it fails with “System has not been booted with systemd as init system”. Every command was checked against systemd 255, and the example units pass systemd-analyze verify.

hostnamectl status # hostname, chassis, machine ID, OS
sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/Los_Angeles # set the timezone (timedatectl status shows it; list-timezones lists all)
localectl status # system locale + keyboard layout
