fzf — fuzzy-find files, history and processes as you type
You can name half of the thing you are looking for — a file, a past command, a process.
On Debian/Ubuntu, most of these tools are also one sudo apt install away.
brew install fzf # install
vim $(fzf) # try: pick a file to open (or press Ctrl-R for history)
