tmux config basics — bigger history, 1-based indexes, auto-renumber

Three settings almost everyone wants: more scrollback, window numbers that match the keyboard, no numbering gaps.

tmux's default prefix is Ctrl-b: “prefix c” means press Ctrl-b, let go, then press c. Every CLI command was run for real against tmux 3.4 in detached test sessions, and every prefix binding was checked against the default binding table.

set -g history-limit 10000 # scrollback lines per pane (default: 2000)
set -g base-index 1 # windows start at 1, not 0 (matches the keyboard row)
set-window-option -g pane-base-index 1 # panes start at 1 too
set -g renumber-windows on # closing a window renumbers the rest — no gaps
