How to open and rename tmux windows — prefix c, prefix ,

One session, several jobs: a window per task, each named for what it runs.

tmux's default prefix is Ctrl-b: “prefix c” means press Ctrl-b, let go, then press c. Every CLI command was run for real against tmux 3.4 in detached test sessions, and every prefix binding was checked against the default binding table.

# inside tmux: prefix c creates a window; prefix , prompts for its name
tmux rename-window -t work:1 logs # the same rename from the command line

Good to know

Windows are numbered from 0 by default (base-index can change that — see the config section).
