How to swap tmux panes and cycle layouts — prefix { }, prefix Space

Two panes are in each other's places, or the current arrangement wastes space and a preset layout fits better.

tmux's default prefix is Ctrl-b: “prefix c” means press Ctrl-b, let go, then press c. Every CLI command was run for real against tmux 3.4 in detached test sessions, and every prefix binding was checked against the default binding table.

# prefix { swaps this pane with the previous one; prefix } with the next one
# prefix Space cycles to the next preset layout (next-layout)
tmux select-layout tiled # jump straight to a layout instead of cycling
# the five preset layouts: even-horizontal, even-vertical,
# main-horizontal, main-vertical, tiled
